Health and Safety Training

Health and safety training is a key part of working towards reducing accidents and ill health at work. Training will ensure that staff understand company procedures, are aware of workplace dangers, know how best to respond in dangerous situations and develop a positive attitude to safety at work.

Training means helping people to learn how to do something – to increase their understanding and/or skill level. It can be carried out in a wide variety of ways – including classroom training, new staff inductions, through watching health and safety videos / dvds, working with interactive cd rom training programmes and reading.

Facilties Buyer sell a range of health and safety training videos, dvds, CD-Rom training programmes and risk assessment kits in our online shop. Click on the links to start shopping.

Health and safety – the law

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers provide the necessary information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure as far as is reasonably practical the health and safety of their employees.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, expands on this to say that companies must identify situations where health and safety training is especially important – such as when people start work, where employees are exposed to new or increased risks, or where skills may need updating.

Training must be provided during paid working hours, at no expense to employees.

The benefits of carrying out health and safety training

Health and safety training at work will enhance the profitability and effectiveness of a company. Below are a list of the main benefits you will receive from carrying out health and safety training in your organisation:

  • Fewer employees will have an accident or suffer a work related illness. This means that your business will save money on the costs resulting from absenteeism and/or tribunals.
  • Staff moral will be higher when fewer colleagues are off work with work related illnesses / injuries. Also a reduced number of accidents will make staff feel safer and less distressed.
  • Safety training will create a positive attitude to taking care at work. This means that it will become the norm for employees to follow correct procedures.

Who needs health and safety training in your organisation?

Business Owners / Employers

It is important that business owners understand the hazards and risks associated with their working environment. The best way to assess this is to carry out a risk assessment.  Training can be provided to business owners to help them carry out risk assessments, train their employees and fully understand their legal obligations.

Managers and Supervisors

Managers and supervisors need health and safety training so that they understand the company’s health and safety policies and are able to enforce them in the staff that they manage.

Employees

All employees will need some form of health and safety training. The amount will depend on the activities of the business. In particular they must receive training so that they understand any risks to their health doing their job, and safety measures that are in place to protect them. General training to ensure that each employee is able to do his or her job correctly as to avoid risk to themselves or others is also essential and is generally provided as part of an induction.

Refresher training should be provided as required.
